Current and former cast members of Broadway’s “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Mama Mia” and Disney’s “The Festival Of The Lion King,” have joined together to perform “Our Voice – A Celebration Of Black Women In Music.”
This 45 minute show takes its audience on a journey through African American history utilizing the music of African American women. The show includes songs like, “Hoe Emma, Hoe,” a call and response slave song and “Never Give Up” a song originally performed by one of gospel music’s most celebrated contemporary artists, Yolanda Adams.
Kristen Hertzenberg of broadwayvegas.blogspot.com, covered the show. She wrote: “The four ladies ... started with a slave song, moved into the 20s and 30s, through jazz, Motown, and disco to a medley of India Arie, Lauryn Hill, and Erykah Badu. Interspersed throughout the music, they spoke about events that were happening in Black History. In an incredibly moving moment, they all four joined hands singing ‘We Shall Overcome’ and the sweet voices of the children in the audience, unprompted, joined them in the song.”
Nicole Pryor, Angela Clark, Danielle White, and Joel Rene make up the talented cast.
