In early 2002, DARK THEORY members TARON BENSON and VOODO FE' MATHELIER developed
an alternative hip hop project called PHOENIX AND THE SHADOW that uses the aggressive
drum patterns of Drum&Bass, the Caribbean undertones of Reggae, rugged Afro-punk
style guitar riffs, and a backbone steeped in thick bassy hip-hop to create
what they describe as the "TRIPPY STAR" sound. Fronted by the male/female
Brooklynite duo of Voodo Fe and Taron Benson, Phoenix and the Shadow has been
called the hip-hop answer to the White Stripes and the group that will fill
the void left by The Fugees. Backed by a powerhouse four piece band that
includes musicians who have played with anyone from Mystikal to Beyonce', Phoenix
and the Shadow boasts the sheer power of a powder keg on stage, having laid
waste to stages across the world performing with the likes of RUN DMC, Mshell
Ndegeocello, Naughty By Nature, Arrested Development, The Streets at the legendary
Fillmore West for a sold out crowd, TV on the Radio, Jean Grae, the High Times
Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, and many many more. Previously Phoenix and
the Shadow has been added to over 100 college radio stations, charting in the
top ten on 26 of those stations, including number 1 in New York City and Chicago
and #32 on the CMJ charts. Formerly signed to Pendulum Records, Phoenix and
the Shadow has taken the indie high road as they prepare to release their debut
self titled album distributed worldwide by MF Grimm's distribution label, Day
By Day Entertainment.
