
Roland Martin
Roland S. Martin, an award-winning and multifaceted journalist, is a nationally syndicated columnist with Creators Syndicate. He is the author of Listening to the Spirit Within: 50 Perspectives on Faith, Speak, Brother! A Black Man's View of America, and The First: President Barack Obama's Road to the White House as Originally Reported by Roland S. Martin.
A prominent broadcaster, Martin is a commentator for TV One Cable Network and host of Washington Watch with Roland Martin, a one-hour Sunday morning news show. He is also a CNN analyst for a variety of shows including Campbell Brown: No Bias, No Bull, The Situation Room, Anderson Cooper 360, Lou Dobbs Tonight, and is a senior analyst on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Martin has solidified his reputation as a provocative and insightful analyst with numerous guest appearances on MSNBC, FOX News, Court TV, BET Nightly News, BBC News, The Word Network, America's Black Forum, American Urban Radio Networks, NPR's "News and Notes," and media outlets in Canada, Columbia, Italy, Australia and South Africa.
Named by Ebony magazine in 2008 and 2009 as one of the "150 Most Influential African Americans in the United States," Martin is the 2009 winner of the NAACP Image Award for Best Interview for "In Conversation: The Michelle Obama Interview." He also won the award in 2008 for "In Conversation: The Senator Barack Obama Interview."
Internationally recognized as one of the "top 50 political pundits" by the Daily Telegraph in the United Kingdom, Martin was also awarded the 2008 President's Award by the National Association of Black Journalists for his work in multiple media platforms. A graduate of Texas A&M, Martin proudly accepted induction into the school's Journalism Hall of Honor in 2008. He has won more than 30 professional awards for journalistic excellence in total, including a regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television News Directors; top reporting honors from the National Association of Black Journalists; the National Association of Minorities in Cable, and the National Associated Press-Managing Editors Conference.
Martin's work in print media includes formerly serving as executive editor/general manager of The Chicago Defender, the nation's most historic black newspaper. He is also the founding news editor for Savoy magazine under the team of New York-based Vanguarde Media, and is the founding editor of BlackAmericaWeb.com. He has written pieces for Ebony and Essence magazines.
Martin received a master's degree in Christian Communications from Louisiana Baptist University in May 2008. He is married to the Rev. Jacquie Hood Martin, author of Fulfilled! The Art and Joy of Balanced Living, and a college dean in Chicago.
